*Project completed by Anabella Alfonzo while working at omb architects + designers.

While at the office of mcfarlane biggar (omb), Anabella worked with the project team for the UBC bookstore renovation + expansion, the client and the writer, to create a permanent installation that consisted of words fritted along the mezzanine façades. This community engagement piece derived from quotes from students, faculty and staff which, inspired by a book by Italo Calvino called ‘If on a Winter’s night a Traveller’, we distilled and sorted alphabetically, laying them out on the glass panels as continuous book pages enveloping the building. The different levels of transparency created by the fritted words, give the spaces a subtle level of intimacy while allowing the light into the building and inviting users to interact with the words. Inside, the books where the quotes came from are displayed on the wall along with the story of this piece for the users to enjoy. Anabella was responsible for the design and layout of the words on the glass panels through to production at the glass manufacturer, as well as the design of the letterpress poster for the story box.
